Team Member Feature: Janette Tsai

Hi, I’m Janette and I’m a content writer here at Lotus Magazine! I graduated from UCSD and I got my degree in Neurobiology, but career-wise, I took a shift. It took me a while to realize exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I would say I have changed a lot after I graduated after experiencing the real world, in terms of my career. One of the biggest things I’ve learned so far in my life is figuring out career-wise that I define myself as a person not by school. I think for a lot of people growing up, especially kids in traditional Asian American families, your identity becomes associated with what you’re doing in school. One thing I learned a lot is separating myself from just academics and becoming a person outside of that.

Personality-wise, MBTI tells me I’m an INFJ. I definitely come off as quiet and more reserved if you meet me at first, but am someone that comes more ‘to life’ if you really know me! Some things I love are chocolate cake, corgis, and napping. My superpower is being able to nap anywhere and being able to sleep for 14+hours!

A little bit about Janette’s current work

Right now, I manage an electronics company that’s a subsidiary of a larger company abroad. This year, they started a North American branch for sales and distribution, so right now I work in the financial side of things. I manage all the daily things, like managing inventory and sales and I’m talking to a lot of people and doing a bit of accounting. Right now, there are 3 employees in the U.S. so it’s very startup-y in a way but also very busy. So right now, I’ll say my role doesn’t have one title. It kind of encompasses everything.

I am also self employed and work in social media marketing and sales. When I was having my post-graduate existential crisis, I dabbled in various gigs and one was being a virtual assistant in the online fitness industry. From there, I came across other opportunities to get involved in social media marketing and sales.

Some hobbies and interests

Traveling: I’ve really been able to do that in 2022! And part of that was changing my career and finding a job that allowed me to do what I wanted to do in life outside of work so I could have a work-life balance. I also got into camping this year and hope to camp in different places across the country.
EDM/music festivals: I am a huge fan of them and I like getting to travel and attend new ones.
Spending time with my dog: I also got a dog this year! My hobbies definitely include shopping on Amazon and buying him new toys every other week.
Trying new things out: I love going out and experiencing new things, like trying new foods and new places.
Favorite past-time: Reading! For a while I was trying to be ‘cool’ and read a lot of self-help books to try and better myself, but I realized those put me to sleep super fast and I’m definitely more of a fiction reader than non-fiction.
